The Rolex Submariner 124060 is the better-finished watch, and it holds its value better. The Tudor Black Bay 58 costs about half as much and sits better on a wrist under 7 inches. Since Tudor's 2026 update, the BB58 also carries a METAS Master Chronometer certificate, which narrows the technical gap more than most comparisons admit.
We trade both from Suite 429 of the Seybold Jewelry Building in Downtown Miami. Here is how they compare, reference by reference, including the detail most guides miss: there are two different Black Bay 58s on the market. Prices are given as ranges because the market moves.

Which Black Bay 58 are you looking at?

Two Tudor watches carry the name, and the differences change this comparison. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight, ref. 79030N, ran from 2018 to 2025. The Black Bay 58, ref. M7939A1A0NU, replaced it in 2026. Both are 39mm steel divers rated to 200m. They differ in the movement and case height.
The 79030N uses Tudor's calibre MT5402. It is COSC-certified, holds 70 hours of power reserve, and sits in an 11.9mm case. The gilt dial reads "Fifty-Eight".
The 2026 model moves to the MT5400-U, tested first by COSC and then by METAS to Master Chronometer standard. Power reserve drops to 65 hours, and the case slims to 11.7mm. Tudor cut the dial text to two lines, revised the bezel and crown, and fitted its T-fit clasp to all three options: rubber, a three-link rivet-style bracelet, and a new five-link bracelet.
To tell them apart in a listing, look for "Master Chronometer" on the dial and check the reference on the warranty card. Many online comparisons pair the old watch's 70 hours with the new watch's METAS certificate. No single Black Bay 58 has both. If you want to see the range side by side, our Tudor Black Bay 58 listings show the reference and year on every watch.
How do the specs compare?
On paper, the gap is narrower than the price suggests. The figures below are Rolex's and Tudor's published specifications.

The Submariner Date, ref. 126610LN, shares the 124060's case and water rating. It adds a date at 3 o'clock and a Cyclops lens, driven by the calibre 3235.
How do they wear on the wrist?
The 2mm diameter matters less than the total footprint. The Black Bay 58 is narrower and slimmer, and the 2026 model measures 47.8mm lug to lug, which keeps it inside most wrists. The Submariner's 41mm case and wider Oyster bracelet give it more presence than the number alone suggests.
As a rough guide, the BB58 tends to look right below about 7 inches, and both work above it. Wrists vary in shape as much as size, though, so trying both on is worth more than any measurement. Viewings are by appointment only. We don't accept walk-ins.
Clasp design matters more here than most guides allow. Wrists swell in Miami heat, and a bracelet that fits at 9 a.m. can pinch by mid-afternoon in August. Both watches let you adjust without tools. Rolex's Glidelock slides in small steps inside the clasp. Tudor's T-fit gives five positions across 8mm. Either one beats moving a half-link every season.
Where does the Submariner's extra money go?
Most of the premium goes into the finishing you notice on the wrist. Case and bracelet tolerances are tighter, and the hour markers are 18k white gold filled with Rolex's Chromalight lume. Hold both under good light, and the Submariner looks sharper at the edges.
The Black Bay 58 trades some of that polish for character. Its matte domed dial and Snowflake hour hand come from Tudor's own diving history, specifically the 1958 ref. 7924. That matters if you've heard the BB58 described as a cheaper Submariner. Tudor has its own design lineage, and 2026 marks the brand's hundredth year.
The Submariner has been in production since 1953, and the current 41mm case arrived in 2020.
Is the Tudor movement as good as the Rolex?
On certification, the 2026 Black Bay 58 holds the more demanding third-party test. On accuracy, the Submariner has the tighter guaranteed band. In daily wear, both run well within what an owner will notice.
METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, tests the finished, cased watch. To earn a Master Chronometer certificate, the BB58 must hold 0/+5 seconds a day and resist magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss, with water resistance and power reserve also checked.
Rolex runs its own Superlative Chronometer test after COSC, also on the cased watch, to -2/+2 seconds a day. Rolex doesn't publish a gauss figure for the calibre 3230, so treat any number you see quoted for it with caution.
Power reserve is the one spec where the old Black Bay wins. The 79030N runs 70 hours, matching the Submariner, while the 2026 model is rated at 65. Take either off on Friday evening, and they'll still be running Monday morning.
Does ceramic vs aluminum matter in Florida?
It does if the watch spends time on a boat or a beach. Rolex's Cerachrom insert is very hard to scratch, and Rolex says its color holds up under UV light. The Black Bay 58's anodized aluminum insert marks more easily and can fade over years of strong sun.
Some owners want exactly that. A faded aluminum bezel is how vintage divers earned their look, and it's the reason Tudor kept aluminum on a watch built around 1950s proportions. If you want the watch to look the same in ten years, choose ceramic. If you want it to record where it's been, aluminum does that.
Water resistance matters less than it looks. Both 200m and 300m are well beyond snorkeling, swimming, and recreational diving. For salt-water use, a screwed-down crown, a freshwater rinse afterward, and seal checks at service do more for longevity than the extra 100m.
How big is the price gap?
New, a steel Submariner lists at roughly twice the price of a Black Bay 58. Rolex's US list price for the 124060 rose to $10,050 in January 2026, and the Submariner Date costs more. The 2026 Black Bay 58 sits between $4,975 on rubber and $5,225 on the three-link bracelet at US retailers.
Unworn and pre-owned prices move with condition and completeness. A full set with box and papers commands more than a watch without them, for both models. Pricing moves with the market. Ask us for a current quote.
Which holds its value better?
Historically, the Submariner. New supply runs through authorized retailers on allocation, which supports demand on the secondary market. The Black Bay 58 is easier to buy new, so pre-owned examples usually trade below retail.
There's another side to it. A smaller purchase price means less money committed, and a BB58 bought well loses less in absolute terms. We don't treat either watch as an investment. Buy the one you'll wear.
Can you get a Submariner without a waitlist?

New, from an authorized retailer, rarely quickly. Rolex allocates its sport models through its retailers. Unworn or pre-owned, from an independent dealer, yes.
We are not an authorized dealer for Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Cartier, IWC, Omega, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tudor, or any other watch or jewelry brands.
Our pre-owned Rolex Submariner listings carry the Condition, Year, Papers, and Box details for each watch. If the reference you want isn't there, we'll source it. If we don't have it, we'll find it.
What should you check when buying either one?
Confirm the reference and generation first, then documentation and condition, and only then discuss price.
- Reference and generation: For the BB58, confirm whether it's a 79030N or a 2026 M7939A1A0NU. For the Submariner, confirm whether it's a 124060 or 126610LN.
- Box and papers: Check that the warranty card matches the serial and reference. Our guide to box and papers covers what a complete set includes and how to verify it.
- Bezel: It should click cleanly in one direction. On the BB58, inspect the aluminum insert for scratches or fading, and compare it to the listing photos.
- Bracelet and clasp: Look for stretch between links and test every adjustment position.
- Case and crown: The crown should screw down smoothly without grinding.
- Timekeeping and service history: Ask for both.
Every watch we sell lists its own Condition, Year, Papers, and Box. Each carries our authenticity guarantee, a 1-year in-house warranty, and 7-day returns or exchanges.
What should you buy?
Buy the Submariner if resale matters to you and a 41mm case suits your wrist. It's the more refined option, and the ceramic bezel will look the same in a decade.
Buy the Black Bay 58 if you have a slimmer wrist or would rather spend the difference elsewhere. The 2026 model gives you METAS certification. A 79030N gives you 70 hours of reserve at a lower price.
They wear differently enough that owning both makes sense too.
Frequently asked questions
1. Is Tudor owned by Rolex?
Yes. Hans Wilsdorf founded both, and Tudor operates as Rolex's sister brand. Tudor designs and builds its own watches and manufactures movements.
2. Is the Black Bay 58 a copy of the Submariner?
No. The Black Bay 58 is based on Tudor's own 1958 diver, ref. 7924, and has its own dial and case design.
3. What's the difference between the 79030N and the 2026 Black Bay 58?
The 79030N uses the COSC-certified MT5402 with 70 hours of reserve in an 11.9mm case. The 2026 M7939A1A0NU uses the METAS-certified MT5400-U with 65 hours of reserve in an 11.7mm case, plus T-fit on every strap.
4. Is the Black Bay 58 more accurate than the Submariner?
The Submariner's Superlative Chronometer standard is tighter at -2/+2 seconds a day. The 2026 Black Bay 58's METAS standard is 0/+5 but includes independent magnetic testing to 15,000 gauss.
4. Can I see both watches in person?
