Home checks still catch the obvious fakes: the rehaut engraving, the Cyclops magnification, the caseback, the movement of the seconds hand, and whether the papers match the watch. What can you check yourself?
These checks apply to modern Rolex watches. None of them proves a watch is genuine on its own. Failing one is a strong warning sign.
- Rehaut engraving. On modern Rolex watches, the inner ring between the dial and the crystal is engraved with ROLEX all the way round, with the serial number at 6 o'clock. The engraving should be crisp and line up with the minute markers.
- Cyclops lens. On date models, the Cyclops lens over the date magnifies it 2.5 times, so the date should fill the window. A small, weakly magnified date is a common sign of a fake.
- Crown etched in the crystal. Modern Rolex crystals carry a tiny laser-etched Rolex crown at 6 o'clock, hard to see without a loupe.
- Caseback. Most Rolex models, including the Submariner, Datejust and GMT-Master II, have a solid, plain caseback. A clear display back on one of these is a red flag.
- Seconds hand. A Rolex seconds hand moves in a smooth sweep. A hand that ticks once a second points to a quartz movement, which Rolex does not use in its current line.
- Reference and serial numbers. The reference should match the model, dial and bezel. The serial on the rehaut should match the serial on the papers.
Why can't home checks confirm a Rolex is genuine?
High-grade counterfeits now copy the engravings, the Cyclops and the weight closely enough to pass a visual check. Some genuine watches also carry non-original parts, such as a replacement dial or bezel, that only show up under closer inspection. That's why an experienced watchmaker's examination is the step that settles it.
What are box and papers on a Rolex?
"Box and papers" means the original packaging and documents that came with the watch when it was first sold. The papers are the most important part: the Rolex warranty card or certificate, dated and carrying the watch's serial number. A full set may also include booklets, hang tags and the outer box. Papers link the watch to its original sale, which is why a full set usually adds to the value.
Does a Rolex without papers mean it's fake?
No. Papers get lost, especially on older watches, and many genuine Rolex watches change hands without them. Papers can also be faked, so a full set is not proof on its own. What matters is the watch itself, and whether any papers present match its serial number.

No. No-date models such as the Submariner 124060, the Explorer and the Oyster Perpetual have no Cyclops lens, so rely on the other checks.
Where are the serial and reference numbers on a Rolex?
On modern Rolex watches, the serial number is engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock. On older watches it's between the lugs at 6 o'clock, with the reference between the lugs at 12, visible only with the bracelet removed.
