What determines a Rolex trade-in value?
Five things set the value of a Rolex:
- Reference and metal. A steel sports model, a Rolesor Datejust and a gold Day-Date sit in different brackets.
- Year. It places the watch in a generation, and on some references, like the Explorer 214270, it separates dial versions.
- Condition. Case, bracelet, crystal and dial, plus how the watch keeps time.
- Box and papers. A full set usually supports a higher figure. A watch without them is still bought.
- The market. Demand for the reference right now, and for discontinued models, how many are available.
How does the valuation work, step by step?
- Submit details and photos. Send the reference, year, what's included and photos through the sell or trade form, or by email.
- Receive a market-based offer. The Timeless Collector reviews the watch against the current market and comes back with a figure.
- Send the watch. Accept the offer and we send a prepaid, insured overnight shipping label.
- Authentication. Experienced watchmakers authenticate the watch and inspect its cosmetic condition, its timing and, where it applies, its water resistance.
- Payment. Payment is deposited promptly after the watch is received and authenticated.
What should you send for an accurate valuation?
The closer the photos and details match the watch, the closer the offer will be to the final figure. Include the reference number, the year of purchase or the date on the papers, and whether you have the box, the warranty card or certificate, and any service records. Photograph the dial, case sides, caseback, clasp and bracelet in natural light.
How is condition assessed?
Condition is assessed on the watch itself once it arrives. Our watchmakers look at the cosmetic state of the case, bracelet and dial, check the timing, and test water resistance where that applies to the model. Mention any known issues, such as a service that is due, when you send the details.
Does a watch without box and papers have less value?
Usually a little, yes. Papers tie a watch to its original sale and make it easier to sell on, so a full set tends to lift the value. The Timeless Collector still buys watches without box and papers, and values them on their own merits.
Trade-in or outright sale?
The valuation is the same process either way. With a trade-in, the value goes toward another watch from The Timeless Collector, such as a piece from the Rolex collection or one we source for you.
